Frente POLISARIO condemns spate of Morocco’s racist acts in occupied Western Sahara

Geneva,  May 26, 2021 (SPS)-  The Frente POLISARIO has denounced the appalling spate of Morocco’s racist acts and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law against civilians, activists, lawyers and journalists in occupied Western Sahara.

In a letter sent to its representation to the United Nations (UN) and international organizations in Geneva (Switzerland), Frente POLISARIO has denounced “the deployment of occupation forces since 13 November in El Guerguerat and its assault against Sahrawi civilians that demonstrate peacefully against Morocco’s violations of human rights and the illegal exploitation of natural resources in occupied territories,” flouting the ceasefire agreement.

Frente POLISARIO rejects Morocco’s attempts to impose the fait accompli policy on Western Sahara and to legitimize its occupation through the committees of the Moroccan National Council for Human Rights (CICR) or the Red Crescent, calling the International Red Crescent Committee (IRCC) “to strengthen cooperation with POLISARIO to better protect the victims from violations.”

Recalling that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is a founding member of the African Union (AU), Frente POLISARIO “strongly resented” the signing by a group of African states of a communiqué read by the Moroccan delegation before the Human Rights Council on 25 February 2021, to support the alleged Moroccan sovereignty over the occupied Western Sahara, in contradiction with the international legal status and the numerous decisions of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, in addition to the violations of the principles mentioned in Article 4 of the AU Constitutive Act,” said the source.

In addition, Frente POLISARIO has expressed to the UN Human Rights Council “its deep concern” over the refusal by the Moroccan authorities to implement the recommendations of the Anti-Torture Committee (ATC), November 2016, in favor of the Sahrawi activist, Naâma Asfari detained since 2010.SPS
