Syrian National Coalition “ready to make peace with Israel”
According to one its leaders, Kamal al-Labwani, the Syrian National Coalition would be willing to conclude a peace deal with Israel: the Jewish state would step up its support for the Syrian opposition’s efforts to topple President al-Assad in exchange for giving up the Golan Heights.
The Golan Heights is a Syrian territory which has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 war. It was unilaterally annexed by the Jewish state in 1981, in violation of all the relevant UN resolutions. About 90,000 Syrians fled the region, while 7,000 still live there under Israeli occupation.
President Bashar al-Assad has always considered the return of the Golan Heights as the main objective of his diplomatic agenda.
The Syrian National Coalition is regarded by Westerners as the “legitimate representative of the Syrian people,” although it mainly comprises the Muslim Brotherhood and representatives of Saudi Arabia.
